Yesterday, we celebrated our first year here. March 9th is a date that has become a part of our family history. It is the day we left Australia and, due to the placement of the International Date Line, it is also the day we arrived in America, thus firmly cementing its place in our history. As is so often the case when thinking back over a year, it seems as if it has flown and yet when we think about our last days before our departure and the first days of our arrival, it seems so long ago.

This had been a year of settling in:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Bradley has settled into a new job and and new role, working on a project which is complicated in so many ways. He loves the complexity and seems to be enjoying this job very much. The girls have settled into their sweet little school, made friends and leapt ahead with their learning. Morgan is starting to read and Vivien is entranced with letters and their sounds. We are doing lots of reading and painting these days.

This has been a year of family:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    We got to see my family and Bradley’s family in the US, so much more than we usually do. We visited with family during ten out of twelve months this year! We got to go to Brad’s brother’s wedding in Florida, we traveled to Maine, Vermont and Tennessee to see my family.

This has been a year of adventure:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Bradley and I started learning to sail. In a place surrounded by water this is a wonderful thing to do. We plan to continue this adventure this year and include the girls even more now that they are just a bit bigger.

It is said that it takes a year to adjust to a big change and I’d say that feels about right. After being here for one full cycle of all the seasons, this little spot in the world feels like home, at least for now. While Bradley and I still long for a bit more culture and the inspiration it brings us, while we all miss our friends that are far away, for the moment we are happy here surrounded by natural beauty enjoying the family we have near by and watching our girls grow into the people they will be. We look forward to the adventures this coming year will surely bring.
